What you'll do

  • The master's thesis is embedded in an ongoing research project and investigates how low-energy electron beam processes can be used to specifically influence the microbial community in biofilters of recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS). RAS are considered a particularly sustainable form of aquaculture, as they reuse water almost completely and rely on biological filters that microbially degrade ammonia and nitrite. The challenge is to condition these biofilters quickly and stably – a process that currently takes several weeks. Through the use of electron beam technology, a new approach is to be researched that improves biofilter performance and shortens the conditioning time.
