How do I convert my Indian CGPA to a German grade?

Enter your obtained grade (Nd), your maximum possible grade (Nmax, usually 10 for CGPA), and your minimum passing grade (Nmin, usually 4 for CGPA). The Modified Bavarian Formula then maps your score to the German 1.0 to 5.0 scale. A 9.0 CGPA on a 10-point scale typically converts to roughly 1.5 in the German system.

Is the Modified Bavarian Formula accepted by all German universities?

Most German public universities and uni-assist accept the Modified Bavarian Formula as the default conversion method, but some institutions apply their own variants or use the Anabin database. Always check the target university's admissions page; uni-assist generates an official Vorpruefungsdokumentation (VPD) with the exact converted grade your application will use.

What German grade is considered good for Master's admission?

A German grade of 1.0 to 1.5 is excellent (sehr gut), 1.6 to 2.5 is good (gut), and 2.6 to 3.5 is satisfactory (befriedigend). Top public universities like TUM, RWTH Aachen, and the LMU usually expect a converted grade of 2.0 or better for competitive Master's programs in engineering, computer science, and management.

Can I use this calculator for percentage-based degrees?

Yes. Enter your obtained percentage as Nd (for example 75), 100 as Nmax, and your minimum pass percentage as Nmin (typically 40 for Indian universities, 50 for some Pakistani and Sri Lankan systems). The formula returns the same German 1.0 to 5.0 scale, regardless of whether your home grade is a percentage, CGPA, or letter grade.

Why does my converted German grade differ from what uni-assist returns?

Uni-assist applies country-specific adjustments and may use a different Nmin reference (for instance, India is treated as Nmin = 35 for some boards). This calculator uses the unmodified Modified Bavarian Formula, so treat the result as a planning estimate and submit your transcripts to uni-assist for the legally binding conversion.

Does the German grade affect my visa or scholarship eligibility?

The German grade itself is not part of the visa decision; the German embassy only checks admission letters and finances. However, DAAD scholarships, Deutschlandstipendium, and many university merit awards use your converted German grade as a primary cutoff, often 2.0 or better. A strong converted grade can also unlock fee waivers at private universities.
