The uni-assist VPD, explained

What the Vorprüfungsdokumentation is, who actually needs one, how long it takes, and the verified policies of the universities that use it. Process facts checked against the official uni-assist pages on 4 June 2026.

What a VPD actually is

The VPD is a certificate issued by uni-assist. Per the official VPD page it documents which educational certificates you submitted, how uni-assist evaluates them, and how it rates your grades within the German grading system. It is not an admission decision and it is not a full application: it is the pre-check some universities want before you apply on their own portal.

Not every applicant needs one. Whether you do depends on your university: the university can advise which applicants require a VPD, and the official list of uni-assist universities shows who works with the VPD procedure. Universities that ask for it usually ask applicants with degrees from outside Germany.

How the VPD procedure works

  1. Apply online in the My assist portal (my.uni-assist.de) for your chosen university, selecting the VPD application.
  2. Upload your documents: complete certificates in the original language plus certified translations into German or English, and pay the handling fee (75 EUR first course per semester, 30 EUR each additional; the VPD costs the same as a standard application).
  3. Wait for the evaluation. The general VPD guidance says 4 to 6 weeks, but the official current processing times run longer: 6 to 7 weeks for Asia, North America and Oceania (uni-assist, last updated 1 June 2026). uni-assist recommends applying at least 8 weeks before your deadline.
  4. Receive an email when your VPD is ready and download it from My Inbox in your My assist account.
  5. Apply directly to the university with the VPD before its deadline, uploading the VPD with your application documents.

A VPD is valid for one year from its date of issue, no matter which semester you selected, so one VPD can cover applications across a full cycle. All steps per the official uni-assist VPD, fee and current processing-time pages, checked 4 June 2026. Processing times change; always check the live page when you plan.
