Your German student visa is delayed. What to do now
What the German missions officially say about waiting times, the four things that actually protect your admission, and how to tell a delay from a refusal.
Last updated:
First work out which wait you are actually in

People use the word delay for two completely different problems. The fix is different for each, so name yours before you do anything.
Wait 1: you cannot get an appointment
You have your admission letter but no slot to submit the file. In India, applications start on the Consular Services Portal and the appointment is then booked through the mission’s service provider VFS, per the German Missions in India national visa page, checked 27 July 2026. This is a queue problem, not a decision problem. Nobody is assessing your case yet.
Wait 2: you have submitted and heard nothing
Your file is in and the clock is running. This is the wait people mean when they say their visa is stuck, and it is the one with an official answer.
The German Missions in India national visa FAQ, checked 27 July 2026, states it plainly:
Depending on the category of your national visa application, processing may take several months.
Status inquiries will not be answered within the first three months after filing your application, as this increases the processing time considerably.
You will be notified on the result of your application automatically once it has been decided upon.
Read the second line carefully, because it is the most useful sentence on this page. Chasing your file in the first three months does not just fail, the mission states it makes processing slower overall. There is no number to negotiate and no queue position to check. The honest answer to "how do I speed this up" is that you cannot.
One thing you can confirm: that your file was actually complete when you handed it in. A student application will not be decided if a required document is missing, and the mission does not check your papers before your appointment. Compare your submitted set against the official student checklist, last updated September 2024 and checked 27 July 2026. The items people most often get wrong are the APS certificate, which is mandatory for Indian applicants with only a few listed exceptions, and the proof of funds, which must show 11,904 EUR for the first year with confirmation that no more than 992 EUR per month can be withdrawn.
Protect the admission, because that is what you can control
The visa decision is not in your hands. Your university seat partly is. Do these four things this week.
1. Tell the university now, in writing
Do not wait until the enrolment deadline passes. Email the international office, say your visa application was submitted on a specific date and is still being processed, and ask two direct questions: can enrolment be extended, and can the admission be deferred to the next intake. Ask for the answer in writing. Late enrolment and deferral both exist at many German universities, but they are almost never granted after the fact.
2. Ask about a deferral to the next intake, before you need it
A deferral is not a failure. It is the normal way this gets handled. If your program runs both intakes, moving from October to April costs you six months, not a year. Across the 2,655 Master’s programs in our catalogue, 1,307 publish a summer deadline, so roughly half take an April start. Check whether yours is one of them on its program page, and read our summer intake guide for the deadline pattern.
3. Keep the money and the documents valid
- Leave the blocked account funded. Withdrawing it while a decision is pending removes the evidence your file rests on.
- Watch expiry dates. Passports, language certificates and health insurance confirmations all have them, and a document that expires during the wait can turn a delay into a fresh application.
- Keep your address and phone reachable. The mission notifies you automatically, and a bounced email is your problem, not theirs.
4. Do not book a flight or pay a rent deposit
The visa is not issued until it is in your passport. Every year people lose money on tickets and housing deposits bought against a decision that had not been made. Book after, not before.
What does not work
The wait produces a lot of advice. Most of it costs money or time and changes nothing.
- Daily emails to the visa section. The mission has stated that status enquiries in the first three months increase processing time. Sending more of them is working against yourself.
- Paying someone who claims a contact inside the mission. Nobody has one. Visa decisions are made by officials under the Residence Act, and an agent cannot move a file.
- Filing a second application while the first is pending. You end up with two incomplete threads instead of one, and you pay twice.
- Escalating on social media. It does not enter the file.
The only genuinely useful action inside the first three months is the boring one: make sure the university knows, and make sure your paperwork stays valid.
If it turns into a refusal, not a delay
A refusal is a different situation with a hard deadline, so know the rules before you are in it.
Remonstration no longer exists. The Federal Foreign Office abolished the remonstration procedure for visa rejections worldwide from 1 July 2025, per its official announcement, checked 27 July 2026. In India the German visa sections had already stopped accepting remonstrations from 1 January 2024. Any guide that still tells you to write a remonstration letter is out of date.
Per the German Missions in India page on what to do after a national visa rejection, checked 27 July 2026, two options remain:
- Apply again at any time. This is usually the faster route when the refusal was about a missing or unclear document, because you can fix the gap and file a complete application.
- File a lawsuit against the rejection. The case goes to the administrative court in Berlin and must be filed within one month after receiving the refusal. This route costs money and takes time, so it fits a refusal you believe is wrong on the facts, not one caused by a missing paper.
Read the refusal letter properly before choosing. It states the reason, and the reason decides which of the two makes sense. A document gap means reapply. A disagreement about your funding or your intent to study is the kind of thing a court reviews.
Where these facts come from
Every procedural statement on this page is taken from the German Missions in India or the Federal Foreign Office and was checked on 27 July 2026. Visa rules change, and your own mission’s page is always the final word. Program counts come from our own catalogue of active, published Master’s programs, queried the same day. Our full application process guide covers the steps before the visa.
