What you need to apply for Materials Science and Engineering at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT)
English language proficiency (TOEFL iBT: 88 points or more, IELTS: at least 6.5 overall and no section below 5.5)
In order to enroll in a degree program taught in German, foreign applicants need to proof sufficient knowledge of the German language. Proof of minimum B1-level is necessary for application. All certificates are accepted, certificate of attendance of a B1-level course is sufficient. For enrollment, proof of DSH2 or one of its recognized equivalents has to be submitted.

The scope and content of these areas should correspond to those of the bachelor's degree program in Materials Science and Engineering at KIT.
There is no conditional admission (catching up on admission requirements while already enrolled in the master's program).
If you do not meet the minimum requirements, you can qualify by taking a written [entrance test](https://www.mach.kit.edu/xzul.php). The test is considered passed if you achieve at least 50 points. It takes place in September for the winter semester and in March for the summer semester. After your application has been reviewed, you may be invited to take part in the test by the selection commission.
Language requirements and certificates
For the master's degree program in Materials Science and Engineering you need sufficient knowledge of German or English. Your German language skills must be at least level C1 and your English language skills at least level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Language certificates are extremely important application documents that can prevent your enrollment if you do not submit them on time. Therefore, check early on in the application process whether you have the necessary language certificates for your degree program and, if necessary, plan to take one of the language tests mentioned above. The deadline by which you must submit language certificates corresponds to the enrollment deadline stated in your admission offer. In justified cases, you can apply for an extension of this deadline. The extension can be granted until the start of the lecture period at the latest.

Written declaration by the applicant as to whether he/she has definitively failed an examination required by the examination regulations in the Master's programme in Materials Science and Materials Engineering or a related course of study with essentially the same content or whether the right to take the examination no longer exists for other reasons

or IELTS (International English Language Testing System) band with a minimum of 6.5 an no section with less than 5.5.

It is possible to replace the TOEFL or IELTS test with a certificate of your university stating that you have completed your studies in English. The test is not necessary if your mother tongue is English or you have completed your former study program in English. In this case the official language of your former study program has to be mentioned on the final certificate, its supplement or the transcript of records.
Chinese, Mongolian & Vietnamese Applicants: Please insert an APS certificate or hand it in the latest by March 31 (for summer term) or September 30 (for winter term).

Communication takes place via the email address that you provide in your online application. After sorting and reviewing the application documents, the selection process takes place at KIT. From around July/August (for Übersee Süd) or November (for Übersee Nord) the confirmations will be sent by e-mail to the successful applicants. The selection process already takes into account the priorities stated when applying. You will receive a maximum of one commitment for your highest possible priority. All applicants receive feedback on their application.
A pre-selection for the state programs will probably be made in November in the International Students Office and lists of proposals will be drawn up, which will be coordinated with the program officers of the individual programs. In some cases, there are also personal interviews afterwards, to which the preselected applicants are invited. These talks usually take place in December. This is especially true for the state programs in Oregon, Ontario and Massachusetts. You will be invited to an interview via email. After these interviews, you will be informed of the result and for which university/s or campus you may be recommended and the respective application documents will be handed out.
