What you need to apply for Economics at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU Munich)

Please note that at the time of your application you must have completed at least 75 % of the requirements of your Bachelor's curriculum (in the case of a 180 ECTS course this would be 135 ECTS points).
If you have not yet finished your Bachelor’s studies at the time of your application, please provide an official transcript of all examination results to date and an overall weighted average grade certified by your university's examination office. In case you fulfill all the requirements you will receive a conditional admission offer depending on your final grade . Please note that at the time of your application you must have completed at least 75 % of the requirements of your Bachelor's curriculum (in the case of a 180 ECTS course this would be 135 ECTS points).
Admission to the Master Program in Economics is determined by a selection procedure that assesses a student’s suitability for the program. This procedure establishes whether applicants who have obtained their Bachelor’s qualification in Economics (or in a subject that is similar in terms of content and methodology) at universities other than LMU are able to fulfil the particular requirements for participation in the Master program.
Requirements include a good understanding of the subjects and methods covered in a Bachelor’s Program in Economics, particularly in Microeconomics, Macroeconomics and Empirical Economics.
To gain an idea of the expected requirements in economics for the Master Program, you should compare your bachelor course studies with our B.Sc. Program and our B.Sc. Examination Regulations in German (Prüfungsordnung PO 2013). In addition to their qualification in Economics applicants must be able to prove that they have sufficient command of the English language (refer to the [list of Evidence](https://www.en.master.econ.uni-muenchen.de/application/ap...)).
Please note that a degree in business studies is not equivalent to our Bachelor's degree in Economics.
What to prepare for your application to Economics

Proof of your studies:
Certificate of the Bachelor’s degree with a proof of the (final) average grade and official explanation of the grading scale. The grading scale must give evidence of the minimum pass-grade required as well as the maximum achievable grade in the subject concerned. Please note that we have to reject applications without a proof of average grade and grading scale certified by your examination office!
Outline of lecture courses and/or transcripts of records of the courses you have attended. If your transcript of records lists all course names, this is sufficient. You do not need to add syllabi.
If your documents are not in German or English an official translation has to be additionally provided.

proven either by a university degree of an English-language institution of higher education (Please note that you will need to upload an official proof that the teaching language of your program has been entirely English. We will have to reject applications without an official proof provided. In case you upload your transcript of records or bachelor certificate, English as the teaching language has to be explicitly mentioned on the document.)
or by either a TOEFL total score of at least 80 points (iBT) or an academic IELTS overall band score of 6.5 points. (screenshot or scan of the test result is sufficient as long as it is clearly identifiable to be yours).
No other proofs of sufficient command of English can be accepted.
If you are not able to provide your TOEFL/IELTS score at the time of application you may upload an informal petition instead via our online-tool, sying that you are going to hand in your result after the application deadline via email. (Deadline: August 31st).

Motivation Letter:
Please be prepared to provide a motivation letter in English with a length of 2,000 to 3,000 characters (key strokes, including spaces). The letter should describe your goals in pursuing graduate studies and in particular why you would like to complete the Master’s Program in Economics at LMU Munich. The letter has to be inserted in the provided text field in our online application tool as an unformatted text without using control characters, indentations or other special symbols.

At the Department of Economics (application period April 1st to 30th) and additionally at the International Office (application period mid May until July 15th)
The Online Tool for the application at our department is open during the application period from April 1st to 30th.
All required documents have to be uploaded there, documents provided by email/mail or handed in personally will not be taken into account.

If your qualification is a Bachelor's degree in Economics from LMU or if the equivalence of your qualification is determinded, and your grade is at least 2.00, you will be admitted to the Master’s Program by receiving a certificate of suitability. If your grade is between 2.00 and at least 2.50 we will invite you to take a written test of admission. Applicants will get an invitation by email at least two weeks before the date of the test.
If the equivalence of your qualification cannot be unambiguously established, but a proximity to Economics in terms of content and methods can be established, we will invite you to take a written test of admission in case your grade is at least 2.50. Applicants will get an invitation by email at least two weeks before the date of the test.
