Questions about Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU Munich)

You apply separately, at the same time, to the Master's programme (institute or faculty) and to LMU's International Office. Requirements, documents and deadlines differ widely between programmes, so check your programme's page first.

The deadline for registering with the International Office is 15 January for the summer semester and 15 July for the winter semester. For some programmes, such as Informatics, Statistics & Data Science and Bioinformatics, you use the online portal MoveIN instead of sending documents by post.

For programmes that do not use the MoveIN online portal, LMU's document list says applicants with university degrees from China, India or Vietnam should submit the original APS certificate from the Akademische Prüfstelle at the German Embassy. Programmes that use the MoveIN online portal have their own information sheet, and this page does not state the APS rule for them.

Generally yes, under LMU's German proficiency rules. The exception is Master's and double degree programmes taught in English. Ask your programme coordinator whether special rules apply to your programme.

No. Since winter semester 2013/14 LMU charges no tuition fees. All students pay the semester fee for the Studierendenwerk (Munich Student Union) each semester, including in a leave-of-absence semester. Some special graduate and professional programmes charge their own fee.

Yes. LMU offers English-taught Master's programmes, for which you must prove a very good command of English. It also offers several double degree programmes in English, German or French, which lead to a degree from LMU and one from a second university. It is also involved in Erasmus Mundus Master's programmes such as MaMaSELF in materials science and EMMA in journalism.
