What you need to apply for Geophysics at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU Munich)
1. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a result of at least 550 points (paper-based test) or 213 points (computer-based test) or 80 points (internet-based test)
2. International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) with a result of at least 6.0 points and no sub-test less than 5.0 points
1\. Candidates must hold a bachelor degree in geosciences, geophysics, mineralogy, geology, physics, biology, mathematics, engineering sciences, or related subjects and must provide proof of excellent English.
2\. Candidates for the programme must possess the equivalent of a bachelor's degree (in a programme of at least 6 semesters) with a final grade of at least 3.0 (when translated to the German grading system) in one of the following fields:
Geosciences
Geophysics
Mineralogy
Geology
Physics
Biology
Mathematics
Engineering Sciences
or related subject
In order to become a student in the international masters programme in Geophysics you must submit two applications. One application is to be directed to the international office of LMU, the other one to the Faculty of Geosciences. While the international office will check your formal eligibility for postgraduate studies in Germany the faculty will assess your aptitude for this masters programme. What to prepare for your application to Geophysics
Required Documents
Besides the data that you need to enter in our online form, application will require the following documents:
1. Curriculum Vitae
a. Standard CV including all biographical information, complete academic background, professional experience and practical trainings, as well as additional talents, interests and leisure activities.
b. To be uploaded as PDF file in the Personal Information section of our online-portal.
2. University Certificates
The following set of documents is required for application:

c. APS certificate (if applicable, see below)

Please carefully read the following notes:
a. These documents are only needed from institutions of higher education. Please do not upload in our online portal school leaving certificates, etc.
b. They must be provided in their original language
c. and additionally as certified translations into either German or English, if this is not their original language.
d. Applicants from People's Republic of China, Mongolia and Vietnam need to additionally submit the original certificate from the Akademische Prüfstelle (APS) of the respective German Embassy.
e. If our selection committed approves your application, you will need to immediately mail certified copies of these documents (with the exception of the diploma supplement, which is not needed). These copies need to match the scans you uploaded during the online application!

The International Master's Programme in Geophysics of LMU and TUM is a research oriented programme with a strong focus on modelling and simulation. As such we expect our candidates to possess above average skills and knowledge in at least one of the following fields and a sound background in at least one other:
physics and theoretical geophysics
mathematics
simulation and data processing
tectonics and sedimentology
In your essay, please describe in detail
why and how you meet the above criteria
what you expect to learn and gain from our programme; present and discuss your academic and career objectives, being as specific as possible with regard to your particular research interests within the field of Geophysics and why you intend to pursue your graduate studies with us
how this relates to your accomplishments in your previous academic studies
The essay forms an integral part of the evaluation of your application. Thus, it should be well crafted.
Please also note the following:
The essay must have a length between 700 and 1,000 words.
All external sources used in its preparation and any ideas by other people must be fully and correctly cited.
The essay can only be submitted as PDF.
5)Degree Certificates-For this you must submit in a single PDF the following documents Degree certificate(s) and Transcript(s) of Records.
If your degree was issued from a university outside of the European Union, and your transcript of records does not list the grading scheme used, you must supply an official document listing information on the grading scheme that was employed at your university at the time of your studies.

7)Proof of Proficiency in the English Language
Alternative proofs may be accepted by the selection committee if a corresponding request is made as part of your online application. Alternatives proof might e.g. be
a higher education entrance qualification from an institution with English as language of instruction
a degree from an higher education institution with English as language of instruction
A decision on alternative proofs is made on a case-by-case basis. In general a standardised test is preferred.

1. Our selection committee will start processing applications only after March 1st.
2. The selection committee will decide on your application. If your application is accepted by our committee, we will forward it to LMU's International Office for further processing.
3. Actual admission is the legal privilege of the International Office. If the International Office also approves your application it will issue a notification of admission that we will send to you.
4. Registration, for which your personal appearance is mandatory, then takes place usually in early October.
5. You do not need to prove proficiency in the German language for admission into our programme.
6. Non-EU applicants will need to provide a financial statement. Here you should explain, how you plan to meet the expenses of your stay in Munich, e.g. scholarship, savings, job, parental support, sponsor, etc. Only a personal statement is required. It is not necessary to submit additional documents, such as bank statements, at this stage.
7. For application we will ask you to supply a statement of purpose. This is part of the online questionnaire. In your statement please present and discuss your academic and career objectives, being as specific as possible with regard to your particular research interests within the field of Geophysics and why you intend to pursue your graduate studies in Munich, Germany. Beyond what is apparent from your transcript of records, describe your preparation for the M.Sc. in Geophysics (research projects in which you have participated, internships within the field, and additional training within related fields). Your statement is an important part of your application. It should be clear, concise and well-crafted.
