How to apply
What you need to apply for Master in Quantitative Economics at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU Munich)
Very good knowledge of English documented by either
1. a university degree acquired at an English-language institution of higher education or in an English-instructed program
or a university entrance qualification acquired at an English-language institution
or the result of the verbal section of the GRE general test (75th percentile or higher)
or another proof for proficiency in English of at least level C1
The standard entry requirement is a completed Bachelor’s degree in economics (180 ECTS or above).
Candidates who did not complete their Bachelor in Economics at LMU Munich can be admitted as long as it can be established that their qualification, in terms of content and method, is equivalent to the bachelor’s degree in economics at LMU.
If you have not yet finished your bachelor’s studies at the time of your application, please provide an official transcript of all examination results to date, and an overall weighted average grade. In case of admission you will receive an acceptance offer conditional on your final grade. Please note that at the time of your application you must have completed at least 75 % of the requirements of your bachelor's curriculum (in the case of a 180 ECTS course this would be 135 ECTS points).
1\. We expect excellent knowledge in microeconomics, macroeconomics, statistics, empirical research and, especially, econometrics I and II at an advanced Bachelor’s level to allow students to pursue the MQE program without difficulties.
2\. The standard entry requirement is a completed Bachelor’s degree in economics (180 ECTS or above). Exceptions from this rule are possible in special circumstances.
3\. Applicants to the MQE should be highly motivated to pursue a quantitatively focused and methodologically demanding program with a clear focus to prepare for a research career.
4\. The entire program is taught in English.
5\. Candidates who did not complete their Bachelor in Economics at LMU Munich can be admitted as long as it can be established that their qualification, in terms of content and method, is equivalent to the bachelor’s degree in economics at LMU.
6\. proficiency in English of at least level C1 .
7\. The result of the verbal section of the GRE general test (75th percentile or higher) or passing an admission test at LMU Munich
8.Interview
Candidates who cannot come to Munich for the interview may apply for a video interview. Please note: if you do not show up to your scheduled interview without having given written notice of a valid reason for nonattendance, you will be automatically excluded from admission to the program.
What to prepare for your application to Master in Quantitative Economics
The following documents must be uploaded / the following information entered directly in our online tool during the application period:
Proof of your studies:
Certificate of the bachelor’s degree with a proof of the average grade and explanation of the grading scale together with evidence of the minimum pass-grade required as well as the maximum possible grade in the subject concerned. Please note that we have to reject applications without a proof of average grade certified by your examination office!
Outline of lecture courses and/or transcripts of records of the courses you have attended.
If your documents are not in German or English an official translation has to be additionally provided.

GRE test score
Upload a scan of your GRE results in the application tool, (75th percentile or higher), only in the quantitative section.
Applicants who cannot provide GRE results by the application deadline, must take a written test of admission at LMU in Munich. You will be invited to the test with a two weeks' notice.
Evidence of very good knowledge of English:
proven either by a university degree from an English-language institution of higher education or from an English instructed program
or a university entrance qualification acquired from an English-language institution
or the results of the verbal section of the GRE general test (75th percentile or higher)

Motivation Letter:
A motivation letter in English, at a length of 2,000 to 3,000 characters. The letter should describe your goals in pursuing graduate studies and in particular why you would like to complete the master’s program in Quantitative Economics at LMU Munich. The letter has to be copied into the respective text field in our applicaton online-tool.

Academic References
Please indicate names and contact details of two professors who are willing to issue a letter of recommendation upon request. At the time of the application only the contact details of the referees are asked for. Reference letters are only asked for if the Program Committee needs further information about the applicant. In this case we will contact referees as soon as possible and ask for reference letters with a deadline according to the international practice

We do not accept applications after the deadline.
Documents provided by e-mail/ordinary mail or handed in personally will not be considered; only exception are GRE results (see above).
Incomplete applications cannot be processed.
If your application is rejected, you can apply once again in the application period of the following year.
If your application for the MQE is rejected is without effect for an application to the Master of Economics at LMU Munich (please see supplementary notes in the FAQ section).
The test of admission for winter term 2025/2026 will take place on 31st March 2025, 2pm to 3:30pm and, is a physical presence test. The exact time and conditions will be confirmed in the invitation to the test which will be sent out on 17th March, 2025.
Please note: There is no other possibility - you have to take the test personally in Munich at LMU. Please be prepared to get your paperwork and travel arrangements done quickly in case you get an invitation. There is no funding / no reimbursement available for travel costs. We cannot provide accommodation.
Applicants who cannot attend the test at the regular date may be invited to a follow-up test on 14th April 2025 (2pm to 3:30pm). Only circumstances beyond the control of the individual will make you eligible for an invitation to the second test. Explanations to justify circumstances beyond your control must be submitted via email: [email protected] at the latest at the time of the test of admission I. You have to add documents that provide evidence that the circumstances are beyond your control. In the case of sickness, we require a doctor’s note, which has to be sent by regular mail to: Graduate Master Office, Department of Economics, Ludwigstr. 28, front bldg. Office 303, 80539 Munich, Germany. Candidates whose explanation has been deemed acceptable can take the test on the alternative date.
All applicants from EU and non-EU countries must in addition to their application at our department apply at the International Office of LMU (Referat für internationale Angelegenheiten) which assesses the formal eligibility of applicants for master programs at LMU.
