When Master's applications in Germany actually close

15 July is a real date. It is also not the date most programs use. Here is every winter semester deadline in our catalogue, by month.

Three numbers matter here.

• 717 programs close exactly on 15 July. That is 29% of the ones that publish a winter deadline. The other 71% close on some other date.
• 409 programs close before 1 May. If your plan is built around July, those programs closed while you were still gathering documents.
• May and June together hold 966 deadlines, more than July’s 800. The real crunch arrives two months before the date most applicants have in their heads.

The pattern is not random. Programs that close early are usually the competitive ones with their own selection process, and universities that need time to run interviews or score portfolios. Closing early is a signal about the program, not an administrative accident.

Germany runs two intakes. The winter semester starts in October and is the main one. The summer semester starts in April and is smaller.

1,307 programs publish a summer deadline, so about half the catalogue takes a summer start. Missing the winter intake does not cost you a year, but it does cut your choice roughly in half, and the programs that only run a winter intake are disproportionately the well known ones.

The summer intake is a genuinely good option in two cases: your documents will not be ready in time for a strong winter application, or you need the extra months for a language certificate. It is a poor option if the specific programs you want only start in October, which you can check on each program page before you commit to waiting.

Your deadline is not a month. It is the earliest date on your own shortlist, and every step before it has a queue in front of it. The steps do not run in parallel, which is the part that catches people out.

The steps that have their own waiting time

• anabin check. Free and fast, and it decides whether your university and degree are recognised at all. Do it first, because a bad answer here changes everything after it.
• APS certificate. Required by 1,148 Master’s programs in our catalogue, and mandatory for applicants who studied in India, China, Vietnam, or Pakistan. This is the slowest step and it runs on its own timetable, not yours.
• Language test. Booking, sitting, and receiving a score is weeks, not days, and retaking it is another cycle.
• uni-assist or a VPD. Some programs need a preliminary review document before you can apply to the university at all, which is an extra queue in front of the application itself.

The dMAT adds a fixed date for some Indian applicants

Per APS India’s dMAT page, checked 26 July 2026, a new Digital Master Test (dMAT) becomes part of the APS documentation for Master’s applicants whose previous degree is in Engineering, in Commerce, Accounting, Finance or Economics, or in Business or Management, applying for the Summer Semester 2027 intake or later.

• First test date: 26 September 2026.
• Certificate available: 12 October 2026, through the test taker portal.
• It is run by g.a.s.t., not APS India. Registration, payment, and test centre booking happen with g.a.s.t.
• Test centres include Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Kolkata, Mananthavady, Mumbai, New Delhi, and Pune.

The important part for your timeline: APS India says affected applicants may submit their complete APS documents now, before the dMAT certificate exists, so verification can start in advance. The APS certificate is then issued once the dMAT certificate has been submitted and checked. If you wait for the test before sending anything, you are adding weeks you do not need to spend.

The dMAT is also not a pass or fail test. APS India states that a low score does not automatically lead to a refusal of the APS certificate.

A missed deadline is usually not a lost year. Three routes are worth checking, in this order.

1. The summer intake. 1,307 programs publish a summer deadline, and 615 of those close on 15 January. If you missed a July date, January is about six months away, not twelve.
2. The late-closing programs. 141 programs close in August and 99 in September. These are real programs with real deadlines still open after the July rush, and they are the least crowded applications you will ever send.
3. The next winter intake, used properly. If neither fits, the extra year is only wasted if you treat it as waiting. It is enough time to raise a language score, finish the APS process without pressure, or add the work experience that some programs ask for.

What does not work is applying to a program after its deadline and hoping. German universities apply deadlines strictly, and a late file is normally not read at all.
