Still open on 1 NovWhat you will do
- Research existing thermal switch concepts, such as gas-gap, magnetocaloric, and superconducting switches, and systematically evaluate them for application requirements and feasibility
- Numerically simulate the thermal behavior of promising concepts using FEM and derive initial design candidates for a miniaturized thermal switch
- Identify critical processes or technology components, build initial prototypes to find solutions, and characterize them experimentally
- Document the results in the master's thesis and present them to the research group; outstanding results may lead to continued employment as a doctoral researcher
What you need
- Enrolled in a university degree program at bachelor's or master's level in natural sciences, such as physics, or engineering, such as mechanical engineering, microsystems technology, or materials science, or in another relevant field
- Basic knowledge of thermodynamics and heat transfer, including conduction, convection, and radiation
- Willingness to learn numerical simulation methods such as FEM; initial experience with simulation tools such as COMSOL, ANSYS, or Python
- Basic knowledge of microtechnology for MEMS systems
- Interest in conceptual work and prototype fabrication
- Knowledge of cryogenic engineering or experience with cryogenic measurements, as well as materials science, particularly thermal and mechanical properties at low temperatures
- Initial programming experience with Python or MATLAB for data analysis and simulation control
