Frequently asked questions

How is the IELTS overall band score calculated?

IELTS sums your four module scores (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) and divides by 4. The result is rounded to the nearest half or whole band per the official rule: averages ending in .25 round UP to the next half band; averages ending in .75 round UP to the next whole band. So 6.125 rounds to 6.0, 6.25 rounds to 6.5, 6.375 rounds to 6.5, 6.625 rounds to 6.5, and 6.75 rounds to 7.0.

What IELTS score do I need for German universities?

Most English-taught Master programmes in Germany require IELTS 6.5 overall with no module below 5.5; some programmes accept 6.0 overall. TUM, RWTH Aachen, Heidelberg, and TU Berlin sit at 6.5 minimum. A small number of technical and design programmes ask for 7.0 overall. German-taught programmes ignore IELTS and require TestDaF, telc, or DSH instead.

Is IELTS Academic or General accepted by German universities?

German universities accept only IELTS Academic for admission. IELTS General Training is built for migration and work scenarios, not university entry, and will be rejected. For Blue Card and work visa cases the British Council and IDP both accept General Training, but for any university degree at undergraduate, postgraduate, or PhD level you must take Academic.

How long is an IELTS score valid?

The IELTS Test Report Form is valid for 2 years from the test date. Most German universities require a TRF issued within the last 24 months at the time of application, even if your start date is more than two years out. Plan your test 12 to 18 months before your earliest application deadline to leave a safety buffer.

Do I need IELTS if my Bachelor was taught in English?

Some German universities waive IELTS if your Bachelor was conducted entirely in English and the medium of instruction is documented on the transcript or in a Medium-of-Instruction (MOI) letter. Others (TUM, Heidelberg) require IELTS or TOEFL regardless. Check the target programme page; never assume a waiver without explicit written confirmation in the admissions FAQ.

What's the difference between an average of 6.5 and the IELTS overall band of 6.5?

Mathematically, an average of exactly 6.5 (e.g. 7 + 6.5 + 6 + 6.5 = 26 / 4) is a clean half-band, so the overall band stays at 6.5. The interesting cases are: average of 6.25 rounds UP to 6.5 (gain), average of 6.625 rounds DOWN to 6.5 (preserved), and average of 6.75 rounds UP to 7.0 (big gain). The .25 and .75 rules are why some test-takers chase one extra half-band on a single section, since it can bump the overall by a full band.
