Which test do German universities prefer, TOEFL or IELTS?
German universities accept both TOEFL iBT and IELTS Academic equally; neither is preferred. Pick whichever test fits your strengths: IELTS includes a face-to-face Speaking interview; TOEFL is fully computer-based with a recorded Speaking section. Both scores stay valid for two years from test date and must arrive directly from ETS or the British Council.
What is the official TOEFL to IELTS comparison?
ETS publishes the only official TOEFL iBT to IELTS Academic comparison: TOEFL 118 to 120 equals IELTS 9.0, TOEFL 110 to 114 equals IELTS 8.0, TOEFL 102 to 109 equals IELTS 7.5, TOEFL 94 to 101 equals IELTS 7.0, TOEFL 79 to 93 equals IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 60 to 78 equals IELTS 6.0, and TOEFL 35 to 59 equals IELTS 5.0 to 5.5.
Does Germany accept TOEFL Home Edition?
Most German universities now accept TOEFL iBT Home Edition (also called TOEFL iBT at-home test) since the COVID-era policy was made permanent in 2023. A handful of older programmes still ask for the test-centre version. Check the target programme page; if not stated, write to the international office before booking.
How much does TOEFL cost compared to IELTS?
TOEFL iBT in India costs about US$190 to US$215 (~16,000 INR) at most centres. IELTS Academic in India is about 17,000 INR with British Council and IDP. Both grant a free results service to up to four institutions if selected before test day. Additional Test Score Reports cost US$25 each (TOEFL) or 2,000 INR (IELTS) per institution.
Is TOEFL ITP or TOEFL Junior accepted?
No. German universities accept only TOEFL iBT (Internet-Based Test) for university admission. TOEFL ITP is a paper-based institutional test used internally for placement, and TOEFL Junior is for students aged 11 to 15. Neither is recognised for Bachelor or Master applications. Always book TOEFL iBT, also called the official TOEFL, for university use.
What if my IELTS score has individual band requirements?
Some programs ask for a specific minimum in each of the four IELTS sections (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) on top of the overall band. TOEFL iBT does not split the overall score the same way (each of its four sections caps at 30 points). When converting in either direction, this calculator returns only the overall band; check the target program for any per-section requirement separately.
