Question 1

Do I apply to Folkwang through uni-assist?

Accepted Answer

No. International applicants for a complete course of study apply directly to Folkwang, in exactly the same way as German applicants, and not through an external body such as uni-assist.

Question 2

Do I need German to study at Folkwang?

Accepted Answer

Yes, in most cases. German is the official language of instruction in all study courses, and you must prove the German level your course requires by enrolment at the latest. The exception is the M.A. Design Futures, which also has an English-language track; for that track you prove English instead.

Question 3

Can I apply before I have my German certificate?

Accepted Answer

Yes. If you have not yet reached the required level, you can apply without a German certificate. You must then submit a certificate at the required level by enrolment, which means by the end of March for the summer semester and by the end of September for the winter semester.

Question 4

Which language certificates does Folkwang accept?

Accepted Answer

Folkwang only recognises officially recognised certificates that show the result on the CEFR scale, for example from the Goethe-Institut, telc or TestDaF. It does not accept certificates of participation.

Question 5

Do my documents need to be translated?

Accepted Answer

For the application, Folkwang accepts academic documents in their original German or English version. Documents in other languages need an official translation, and you upload both a scan of the original and the translation. If you are accepted, you show the original or a certified copy when you enrol.

Question 6

How much is the semester fee at Folkwang?

Accepted Answer

For the winter semester 2026/27 the semester fee is 374.80 EUR: 23.00 EUR for the AStA, 120.00 EUR for the student union and 226.80 EUR for the Deutschlandticket. Students whose main enrolment is at another university pay nothing at Folkwang if they are in a joint programme, and otherwise only the AStA contribution. For re-enrolment, the payment must reach Folkwang between 15 June and 15 September (winter) or 15 January and 15 March (summer).

Question 7

Is there student housing in Essen?

Accepted Answer

The Studierendenwerk Essen-Duisburg has over 2,000 places in its residences in Duisburg, Essen and Mülheim. In Essen, for example, Rottstraße 15 in the city centre has single apartments and shared flats from 498 to 563 EUR.
