North American Studies is a Master of Arts at Freie Universität Berlin's John F. Kennedy Institute for North American Studies (JFKI), covering the US and Canada. It takes 4 semesters and starts in the winter semester. You study two of six disciplines, cultural studies, economics, history, literary studies, political science and sociology, choosing one as your core discipline, plus compulsory interdisciplinary courses on current topics. The curriculum also includes courses taught by two faculty members from different fields. You also take a colloquium in your core discipline, ideally around the time you write your MA thesis. Studying abroad for part of the programme is encouraged but not required. The page is not consistent on language: its facts box lists German and English, while the institute's text says courses are taught only in English and German skills are not required.
Specialization
Students may choose two areas of concentration out of six areas politics, sociology, literature, economics, culture history.
