Admission Requirements

University Degree

A first qualifying degree (BA/Magister Artium/Diplom) from a German or recognized foreign university in one of the subjects taught in the programme (African Studies, Ancient History, Art History, Assyriology, Classical Archaeology, Coptology, Ethiopian Studies, Greek Studies, Historical Musicology, Indology, Indonesian and Malay Studies, Iranian Studies, Islamic Studies, Japanese Studies, Jewish Studies, Medieval and Modern History, Sinology, Thai Studies, Turkology, Vietnamese Studies) or a related one.

In exceptional cases, the above access requirements may be derogated from the fact that due to special circumstances, at least equivalent qualification and suitability may be assumed. Applicants who have completed their undergraduate studies, but have not received their degree certificate yet may submit the certificate by the end of the first semester of the master’s program.

Additional Special Admission Requirements

All applicants must provide evidence of proficiency in English equivalent to B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). (Native speakers of English need not submit a language proof.
