University Degree A degree in the Bachelor's degree program in Physics from the Universität Hamburg or a comparable degree program at a university. The selection committee of the master's program in physics decides on comparability. If you have not received your degree certificate yet, you can submit this by the end of the first semester of your master’s program. Please see the "Documents to Submit" section below for details.
Additional special admission requirements Applicants must have sufficient knowledge of the English language. Sufficient knowledge must be demonstrated as follows: • Proof of English proficiency at level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages through a course at a recognized institution or • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic Test with at least 5.0 or • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) Internet-based test with at least 72 points or • Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE), Proficiency in English (CPE), Higher Business English Certificate (BEC), First Certificate in English (FCE) or 1 FAKULTÄT MATHEMATIK, INFORMATIK UND NATURWISSENSCHAFTEN • University degree in an English language study program or • University entrance qualification for English speaking universities or • six months stay in an English speaking country or • seven years of English lessons at a German-language school or • by comparable evidence. Recognition of Transcripts for Degree Programs Completed at Foreign Higher Education Institutions If you obtained your first degree abroad, your certificate will be reviewed during the application procedure in the faculty of your program. If you are still studying when you apply and cannot yet provide a final certificate
containing your grades, you must submit your current Transcript of Records confirming
your provisional grade point average. You will then need to submit your degree certificate
by the end of the first semester of your master’s program.
If it does not appear on your certificate, add a list of all completed modules or
examinations, often called Transcript of Records or “Excerpt from the examination file”.
Applicants who are currently enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Physics at Universität
Hamburg do not need a Transcript of Records. The grades and credit points at the time of

Step-by-step guide to applying for Physics at University of Hamburg
In order to apply for this degree program, please use Universität Hamburg’s central online application platform STiNE.
If the number of applicants exceeds the number of places available, a selection procedure will be
necessary:
1.1 75% of the study places are awarded according to the result of the first relevant university-level
qualification. In the case of equality of honor, the grade determines the university entrance
qualification.
1.2 For the remaining 25% of the study places, the selection is made according to the result of the
first relevant professional qualification. The grade of the first qualifying degree may be improved
by meeting the following criteria:
a) the qualifications required for the Master's program in Physics (eg internship, summer school)
orwork experience;
b) other qualifications such as international experience and experience in teamwork,
c) justification of the study intention, in particular with regard to the interest in a scientific further
education (letter of motivation).
The criteria a) to c) can each be rated up to 3 points. One point improves the grade of the first
relevant higher education diploma by 0.1 points.
2. The selection decision is made by a selection committee composed of at least three authorized
university professors of the Master's program Physics.
