About the programme
The Sinology Master of Arts at Universität Hamburg deepens your language, subject and method skills, and above all your ability to do independent research on China. A semester abroad at a Chinese or European partner university is a fixed part of the programme. At the start you choose one of two profiles: Culture and Society, which trains you to work with Chinese sources from classical texts to the 21st century alongside theories from cultural, social and historical studies; or Conceptual and Intellectual History, offered bilingually in English and German. Your Master's thesis is on a topic you choose. The programme lasts four semesters, teaching is in German and English, and you can start in winter or summer. Graduates can work in research, international organisations, business, arts and culture management, publishing, journalism or consulting, especially where knowledge of China is needed.

Please submit all documents as uncertified copies. For documents that were not issued in German or English, must also be translated by an officially sworn translator into German or English.

Graduation certificate from your university degree or preliminary transcript of records. If you are still studying at the time of application and cannot present a graduation certificate with a grade, you must submit a current transcript of records with a preliminary average grade. The final certificate must be submitted by the end of the first master semester.

Seminar form (language course, seminar, exercise, etc.).

Qualification thesis BA in digital form.
For applicants from subjects related to Sinology: proof of Chinese language skills (see language requirements).
If necessary: proof of further required language skills in paper form.
