How to apply
What you need to apply for Evolutionary Biology at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU)
yes
the application process is carried out via the study portal of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, [JGU-StINe](https://jogustine.uni-mainz.de/scripts/mgrqispi.dll?APPNAME=CampusNet&PRGNAME=EXTERNALPAGES&ARGUMENTS=-N000000000000002,-N000842,-Abuz%5Faccount%5Feng%5F2). In addition to the usual documents, you must fill out and submit an "admission form". This gives us an overview of your previous areas of study and we can determine whether you meet the above-mentioned admission requirements. Applicants who meet the formal admission requirements will then be invited to an interview by e-mail. The interview is not an examination, but only serves to assess your qualifications and give you an orientation as to whether this course of study is suitable for you.
We will then evaluate the interview.
A typical biology degree in Germany or abroad is usually sufficient for admission.
For non-biologists
We are very interested in making it possible for non-biologists to access this degree program as well. However, since you usually have not taken any evolutionary biology courses in your bachelor's degree program, we also accept courses in computer science, mathematics and biostatistics as a substitute. In addition, however, you must also have basic knowledge of genetics, which will be tested in the interview. You can prepare yourself with the help of the linked[ online textbook](https://web.stanford.edu/group/pritchardlab/HGbook/Release-2023-09/HGBook-2023-09-nochapnotes.pdf). If you have mastered the content from page 8 to 72 and meet the formal requirements mentioned above, you have a good chance!
1\. Proof of a Bachelor's degree with a share of 180 credit points in one of the subjects Biology, Evolutionary Biology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Biomedicine, Molecular Medicine, Human Medicine, Mathematics, Physics, Forensic Science and Bioinformatics at a university in Germany or a degree from a university in Germany or abroad that does not differ significantly from this.
Proof of coursework and examinations in the subjects of evolutionary biology, biostatistics and bioinformatics totalling at least 27 CP must be provided.
2\. If a Bachelor's degree in another scientific subject is proven, admission is possible subject to conditions. The department's study programme representative decides on the type and scope of the study and/or examination achievements to be completed on the basis of the available transcripts of records. Subsequent coursework and examinations should not exceed 60 credit points and must be completed within one academic year. If the proof is not provided within the specified period, it is no longer possible to continue your studies.
3\. It is assumed that students have sufficient active and passive English language skills to enable them to read English-language literature and to participate in courses in English; this also includes the preparation of written coursework and examinations in English.
4\. Passing a subject-specific aptitude test
5.The selection interview
Applicants will be invited to the selection interview in writing by one of the selection officers, stating the time and place. The summons has been issued in time if it has been sent at least 10 working days before the selection interview.
