Questions about Technical University of Munich (TU Munich - TUM)

You apply online through TUMonline and upload all documents as PDFs within the application period, with a separate application for each programme. Depending on the programme, this includes your Bachelor's certificate (or your transcript if you do not have it yet), a current CV without gaps, language proof, a motivation letter or essay and, where required, a uni-assist VPD. Documents sent by email cannot be processed.

For a Master's, TUM counts you as international if you completed your undergraduate studies (your Bachelor's) outside Germany. It depends on where you studied, not on your country of origin or where you live. You need a degree at least equal to a three-year (6-semester) German Bachelor's.

Every Master's programme uses a two-step aptitude assessment. First, your Bachelor's grades and written documents are scored with a point system, and you are admitted, rejected or invited to a 20-minute interview with the department. The interview is the second step.

In general, newly enrolling students from outside the EU/EEA pay tuition, usually 4,000 or 6,000 euros per semester for a Master's; the exact amount is on each programme page. TUM says these rates rise to 4,600 or 6,800 euros for the winter semester 2027/28, while students already enrolled keep the rate in effect when they started. Exemptions exist, for example for students who completed a degree at a German university.

At the Munich, Garching and Weihenstephan (Freising) campuses, the semester fee (the basic student union contribution) is currently 97 euros. It must be paid before every enrolment or re-enrolment and cannot be waived.

Documents in German or English need no translation. Others must be translated into German or English by a sworn translator, and you upload the original and translation together as one PDF. You do not send hard copies before you receive an offer of admission.

Our catalogue lists 100 Master's programmes at TUM, taught in English, German or bilingually.
