Subject you study
Psychology, Human Factors, Physics

What you'll do

  • As part of your work, you will have the opportunity to support the conduct of the hearing study and to prepare and evaluate the resulting data (psychoacoustically).

What you need

  • Ongoing studies in Psychology, Human Factors, Physics or similar.
  • Empathy, sensitivity, and sociability when dealing with test subjects.
  • Enthusiasm for scientific work (data collection and evaluation, literature research, etc.).
  • Enthusiasm for the fields of aviation, human research, and psychoacoustics.
  • Independent working style and willingness to familiarize yourself with new topics.
  • Good knowledge of programming and/or specialized programs such as SPSS, R, LimeSurvey, Matlab, Python, Audacity.

What you get

  • Noise impact research is one of the four core topics of the Sleep and Human Factors Department at the Institute of Aerospace Medicine. In elaborate laboratory and field studies, we investigate the effects of noise from various modes of transport on psychological well-being, cognitive performance, sleep, and other important health parameters. The noise emissions of innovative aircraft designs will differ significantly from those of conventional aircraft, not only in terms of purely physical quantities (such as sound pressure level) but also in terms of the auditory experience and thus their effect on humans (e.g., airport residents). In the long term, the optimization of noise emissions based on purely physical quantities for the development of innovative designs is to be replaced by the optimization of the auditory impression according to human perception. This offers the potential to specifically influence the design so that the resulting auditory impression according to human perception is accompanied by a reduced annoyance perception. In an internal DLR project, a hearing study with approximately 40 test subjects is to be conducted to derive a metric with which the annoyance effect of aircraft designs can be estimated based on numerical data.
  • DLR stands for diversity, appreciation, and equality for all people. We promote independent work and the individual development of our employees in their personal and professional environment. For this purpose, our numerous training and further education opportunities are available to you. Equal opportunities are a particular concern for us; we therefore want to increase the proportion of women in science and management in particular. Applications from severely disabled persons are given preference in cases of equal professional suitability.
