What you'll do
- You support our team in the field of optical sensors and work on a new experimental setup for robust and high-resolution imaging. In this project we investigate optical intensity interferometry. Unlike classical interferometers, light waves are not superimposed directly. Instead, the arrival times of individual photons are measured and statistically compared with each other. An effect from quantum optics is used: With suitable light, photons arrive with slightly increased probability in quick succession ('photon bunching'). From these correlations, information about the size and structure of a light source or an illuminated object can be obtained. In the project, the principle is investigated in a compact laboratory setup. The aim is to demonstrate the advantages of a novel, time-resolving single-photon array detector for the first time in this experimental context. An LED illuminates a structured mask serving as a test object. The light emanating from the mask is spectrally filtered, limited to a defined polarization and then captured with the fast detector array. From the time stamps of the detected photons, correlations between different detector areas are determined, from which spatial information for image reconstruction can be obtained. The project thus combines topics from classical and quantum optics, electronics and measurement technology as well as statistical signal processing and programming. It offers a practical introduction to the development and investigation of modern photonic sensor systems.
