How do I apply for a Master's at FH Dortmund with a foreign Bachelor's?

This is FH Dortmund's route for non-EU applicants. The basic route has two steps. First, apply to uni-assist for a VPD; processing usually takes 4 to 6 weeks, and you can apply for it at any time. Second, apply within the deadline on FH Dortmund's admissions portal and upload all documents as PDFs. The VPD does not replace the application to FH Dortmund. For the European Master's in Project Management, Embedded Systems Engineering, Digital Transformation and Medical Informatics, all non-EU applicants first apply separately for a faculty pre-check, which runs from February to June, and still need the VPD after passing it. International Management needs no pre-check, but FH Dortmund says it is not suitable for most non-EU applicants and has one place for them. Scenography and Communication and Theater and Digitality use an aptitude test instead.

Yes, for most. For the European Master's programmes in Project Management, Embedded Systems Engineering, Digital Transformation and Medical Informatics, non-EU applicants first submit their documents to a pre-check, which runs every year from February to June; these start only in the winter semester, and you still need a VPD from uni-assist. International Management needs no pre-check, but FH Dortmund says this 2-semester programme is not suitable for most non-EU applicants and has only one place for them. Scenography and Communication uses an aptitude test instead of a pre-check.

Do Master's programmes at FH Dortmund have a grade cut-off?

Some do. For programmes with an NC, places go by grades, and there are generally only a few places for non-EU applicants. The NC is not fixed: it depends on how many people apply and their grades, so it can change every semester.

You do not need proof of language skills when you apply. You show it at enrolment. Each programme page says which language level it needs.

How much is the semester fee at FH Dortmund?

For the winter semester 2026/27 the semester fee is 346.80 EUR. It is made up of the Deutschland-Semesterticket (226.80 EUR), the AStA contribution (23 EUR) and the Studierendenwerk fee (97 EUR). Students on a joint degree programme also pay a materials fee, for example 109.20 EUR for the joint degree Master's in Business Informatics. Students on leave for illness, pregnancy, study abroad or voluntary service do not pay the semester fee. You can only enrol or re-register after paying it.

How much money should I plan for living in Dortmund?

FH Dortmund's rough estimate is 450 to 600 EUR a month for rent, about 200 EUR for food and about 150 EUR for insurance, among other costs. It says you should have 992 EUR a month available, and notes that costs tend to rise.

How do I find a room in a student hall in Dortmund?

The Studierendenwerk Dortmund runs halls close to the university and FH sites, with rooms between 350 and 500 EUR depending on size and furnishing. Since August 2024 there is no waiting list: free rooms are published online and you apply directly. Private and church-run halls cost 400 to 650 EUR, and the wait there can be up to 6 months.
