How to apply
What you need to apply for Materials Science and Engineering at University of Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU Erlangen-Nuremberg)
Proof of English language skills at the level of at least B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL) through sufficient school or university knowledge or suitable language certificates. The proof can be provided in particular by:
English lessons at school up to level B2 CEFR with certification to this effect in the school report or a corresponding certificate from the school,
the successful Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with at least 85 points in the iBT, or
the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) 5.0 or higher.
The proof does not have to be provided if the university entrance qualification or the relevant first professional qualification was acquired in English.
With the exception of a small number of degree programmes, German is the teaching language at FAU. Therefore, a very good knowledge of German (at about the Level C1/C2) is essential for successfully completing a degree programme at our University. Applicants are required to have a Bachelor's degree in physics or an equivalent qualification.
The prerequisite for admission to the Master’s program is the possession of a recognized subject-specific Bachelor’s degree (Materials Science, Nanotechnology, Materials Engineering…). Applicants with subject-related or non-equivalent degrees may be admitted to the Master’s program under certain conditions.
Degrees recognized as subject-related are, in particular, bachelor’s or diploma degrees in chemistry, physics, mechanical engineering, process engineering as well as in courses of study with a broad material science focus, if and to the extent that the following minimum knowledge was acquired in them:
1\. at least 10 ECTS credits in mathematics,
2\. at least 20 ECTS credits in physics and chemistry,
3\. at least 10 ECTS credits in lab work and IT, and
4\. at least 20 ECTS credits in fundamentals of materials science.
Requirements:

If you are a FAU bachelor student of Materials Science or Nanotechnology you need to have achieved 140 ECTS in fully completed modules by the time of your application for admission.

The online-application, you need to send your signed application form (from the application portal campo) by post in addition to the following documents:

5.if applicable: if your school certificates are not sufficient for admission, you must also provide a certificate showing you have passed the assessment examination (Feststellungsprüfung) for the degree programme in question (certified copy)
6.if you have completed previous periods of study: complete academic report/transcript of records
7.if you have completed a previous degree: degree certificate (e.g. Bachelor’s degree, Diplom)
8.German language certificates (regular copy)
9.if you are applying for the Studienkolleg: preliminary review documentation from uni-assist (regular copy). The Studienkolleg for all Bavarian universities is in Munich. If you wish to apply to attend a Studienkolleg before starting at FAU, you will be referred to the one in Munich.

11.applicants who have completed previous periods of study in China, Mongolia or Vietnam: APS certificate (original)
12.applicants from DSDI/DSDII schools in China: confirmation of identity from the German embassy (original)
13.applicants for the degree programmes in Medicine, Law and Dentistry, Pharmacy or Food Chemistry must submit proof of passing the Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang ausländischer Studienbewerber (DSH 2 or an equivalent examination). Further information on language requirements.
14.Applicants for degree programmes in Medicine, Dentistry or Pharmacy must submit the original notification from a German Office for the Recognition of Certificates (Zeugnisanerkennungsstelle) confirming that their certificate has been officially recognised. Students who do not have an official letter confirming recognition of their certificates may only enrol by submitting the original certificate together with a translation. In this case, students will be enrolled initially for only one semester. Official confirmation that the certificates have been recognised must be submitted during this time. Only then can students continue to study as planned.
15.Applicants who have passed the external assessment examination must register online via campo.fau.de for degree programmes without admission restrictions by the following dates: 15 July for the winter semester, 15 January for the summer semester. Application by post is no longer required. If all other preconditions are met, these applicants can enrol directly for degree programmes without admission restrictions, however, their application for admission must first be activated via the Admissions Office. To activate your application for admission, send your applicant number via e-mail to the Admissions Office.
16.Certified copies of foreign certificates that are not issued in German, English or French must be submitted along with a certified translation. If your documents do not fulfil the requirements or if important certificates are missing, your application will not be processed.
