1) Bachelor's degree

• Biology at the University of Hamburg or another university within the Federal Republic of Germany

or

• A degree in another bachelor's program in Germany or abroad, provided that at least 60 credit points (CP) in biology comparable to the curriculum of the bachelor's program in biology at the University of Hamburg can be demonstrated. At least 40% of these credit points must be in the areas of biodiversity, ecology and evolution and 40% in the areas of molecular biology and biotechnology . Credits from other programs can be used to achieve the required credits. This also applies to university credits acquired in addition to the bachelor's program.

You can also apply if you are in the final phase of your bachelor's degree program, provided you have at least 150 credit points (often referred to as credit points, credits or ECTS) at the time of your application.

2) German language skills at C1 level and English language skills at B2 level. The latter must be proven by:

• IELTS Test Academic with at least 5.0
• TOEFL internet-based test with at least 72 points
• Cammbridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE), of Prociency in English (CPE), Higher Business English Certficate (BEC),
• First Certificate (FCE)
• University degree in an English-taught program
• University entrance qualification for English-speaking universities
• six-month stay in an English-speaking country
• seven years of English lessons at a German-speaking school (Abitur certificate)

Of the applications that meet the entry requirements for the Master's program in Biology, 70% of the study places will be allocated according to the result of the first professional qualification , 30% of the study places will be allocated according to the grade of the first professional qualification, taking into account the following program-specific qualification criteria :

• according to the professional experience relevant to the Master’s program :
• Completed training: biological, chemical and medical-technical assistant, biology laboratory technician, chemistry laboratory technician, gardener, animal keeper or other state-recognized training with a clear connection to biology (0.3 points),
• Employment(s) with a biological connection with at least half of the regular weekly working hours (1 to 6 months 0.1 points; more than 6 to 12 months 0.2 points, longer than 12 months 0.3 points; individual employments can be summed up to a maximum of 0.3 points),
• Extra-curricular internships with a biological focus that were not credited as academic achievements (1 to 6 months 0.1 points; more than 6 to 12 months 0.2 points, longer than 12 months 0.3 points; individual internships can be summed up to a maximum of 0.3 points
• Employment(s) with a biological connection as a student or research assistant or as a tutor, with at least 120 hours of work 0.1 points (individual employments can be summed up).
• other qualifications :
• International experience of at least 2 months 0.1 points, of at least 6 months 0.2 points,
• Foreign language skills that go beyond school knowledge. German as a foreign language and a native language other than German are not recognized (0.1 points per state-recognized certificate; maximum 0.2 points).
• elected student representative in the student council or another university body (0.1 points per year).
