How to apply
What you need to apply for Materials Science and Engineering at Hamburg University of Technology (TU Hamburg - TUHH)

Admission requires a Bachelor's degree from a Materials Science, Fundamental Engineering Science or Natural Sciences (e.g. Physics, Chemistry) course. Basic education in materials science is additionally required.
Candidates must prove their proficiency in English by one of the following tests: • a valid TOEFL score report. The minimum TOEFL score for admission to TUHH is 90 internet-based. The TUHH institution code is 8165, a department code is not required. The TOEFL ITP or the TOEFL Essentials Test will not be accepted! • a valid IELTS-Academic score report. The minimum overall IELTS score for admission to TUHH is 6.5. • a valid Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English • a valid Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English • a valid “telc English C1”-result A formal proof of proficiency in German is not required for admission to the international Master’s programs. The Master's degree courses in Mechanical Engineering and Management and Mechatronics are partly taught in German. For these courses a basic knowledge of German is strongly recommended.

Please upload the following documents. It is only possible to upload PDF files with a maximum
of 7 MB per file. Documents sent by post cannot be considered:
1. Curriculum vitae / résumé
TUHH does not require or provide any standard format for the CV.
2. Bachelor's degree certificate or provisional degree certificate
Bachelor's degree certificate or equivalent including your aggregate mark or grade average.
If your final degree certificate is not yet available, you need to submit an official provisional
degree certificate and an official letter of your registrar, dean or academic supervisor, listing
the remaining subjects and, if possible, the prospective grades as well as the prospective
final grade average (sample).
3. Complete university transcript of records or provisional transcript
Complete university transcript of records (semester mark sheets), listing your subjects and
grades. If your final year transcripts are not yet available, you need to submit an official
provisional transcript or an official letter of your registrar, dean or academic supervisor,
listing the remaining subjects and, if possible, the prospective grades.
Please also submit a copy of your European Diploma Supplement (if applicable).
4. Official explanation of the university grading system
Official explanation of your university grading system issued by your registrar, dean, or
academic supervisor, indicating at least the maximum passing grade, the minimum passing
grade and the minimum passing grade for graduation. If the complete grading system,
including the minimum passing grade for graduation, is explained on your transcript of
record a separate explanation is not required.
5. Proof of English: TOEFL, IELTS, CAE, CPE or telc
Please refer to page 2 of this guide.
6. ECTS form
For most programs you will find an ECTS form in the online application portal. Please
complete the form to the best of your knowledge.
7. Module manual
For the application a module manual or a detailed summary (subject matter, duration,
examinations etc.) of lectures attended by you during your studies is required.

8. APS certificate
All applicants with a school or university degree from China, India or Vietnam, regardless
of their nationality, have to submit an APS certificate with their application!
Applicants who hold a scholarship from DAAD, another recognized German scholarship
organization or an EU-funded scholarship might be exempted from this requirement.
Applicants have to apply for the APS-certificate at the Academic Evaluation Center in
charge: - Academic Evaluation Center China
The APS procedure might take a long time, so you should apply for the APS certificate as
early as possible! If you have further questions please contact the Academic Evaluation
Centre in charge directly! TUHH has no influence on the awarding requirements and the
awarding process at the Academic Evaluation Centre.
This is a complete list of application documents! Any other documents (GRE, statement
of purpose, letters of recommendation e. g.) will neither be read nor considered.

A formal proof of proficiency in German is not required for admission to the international
Master’s programs. The Master's degree courses in Mechanical Engineering and Management

German is strongly recommended.
