What you need to apply for Ocean and Climate Physics at University of Hamburg
TOEFL test or prior degree in English
a bachelor’s degree in geophysics or oceanography from Universität Hamburg or a comparable degree from another university OR
a bachelor’s degree in another mathematics or physics subject comparable to the curriculum of the consecutive bachelor’s degree in geophysics/oceanography
While the English language requirement is B2, it is strongly recommended at least Level C1 to be able to follow the program.
A B.Sc. in Geophysics or Physical Oceanography at Universität Hamburg or a comparable degree from a different university. A mathematical or physics-oriented B.Sc. degree can also be accepted, if mathematical and physical courses equivalent to the courses taught in the B.Sc. Geophysics/Oceanography, amounting to at least 90 ECTS in math, physics, numerics and/or fluid dynamics, have been completed. If you have not received your degree certificate yet, you can submit this by the end of the first semester of your master’s program. Please see the “Documents to submit” section below for details. Additional special admission requirements Sufficient English language skills to follow scientific lectures, to give presentations and take examinations in English, and to write an English master thesis. A selection procedure is conducted if the number of applicants to a master's program exceeds the number of places available.
In accordance with the Higher Education Act (HZG) and impending amendments to the HZG, admission to master's programs is based on the following quotas:
Ten in one hundred places are allocated for hardship cases (hardship quota).
Once this quota has been filled, the remaining places are allocated as follows:
Ninety in one hundred are admitted based on aptitude and motivation (achievement quota) in accordance with selection criteria established by the faculties.
Ten in one hundred are admitted according to the number of half-years which have passed since qualifications for admission to a master's program have been obtained (waiting period quota).
The faculties decide how aptitude and motivation are determined in their respective selection statutes.
