Greek and Latin Philology

The following special entry requirements apply to the consecutive Master’s program in Greek and Latin Philology :

A first professionally qualifying university degree from a German or recognized foreign university in one of the following subjects:  Classical Philology  ( Latin  or  Greek Studies  as a major or minor),  Byzantine Studies  (major or minor)  , or Modern Greek Studies  (major or minor), or a minimum of 45 credit points in one of the aforementioned or related subject areas. If you are pursuing a specialization in  Byzantine and Modern Greek Philology,  this includes all humanities disciplines, including theology.

In order to choose a profile within the framework of the study program, adequate command of the respective target languages ​​must be demonstrated:

• For the  Latin Studies profile : knowledge of Latin equivalent to the  Latinum  and at least 22 credits in courses with Latin as the source and target language (of which 12 credits can be made up within the course of study by choosing appropriate courses  ) as well as knowledge of ancient Greek equivalent to the  Graecum ;
• For the  Greek Studies profile:  knowledge of ancient Greek equivalent to the  Graecum  and at least 22 credits in courses with ancient Greek as the source and target language (of which 12 credits can be made up within the course of study by choosing appropriate courses) as well as knowledge of Latin equivalent to the  Latinum ;
• For the profile  Byzantine and Modern Greek Philology:  knowledge of Modern Greek, both written and spoken, amounting to 30 credits.

In the case of Latin and Greek, the required language skills are demonstrated by appropriate certificates from the Department of Education and Sports or the Faculty of Humanities, or by certificates recognized as equivalent by the Department. Language skills acquired in a bachelor's program are generally verified by the transcript of records in the Diploma Supplement.

For the profile Byzantine and Modern Greek Philology:

Knowledge of Modern Greek, both written and spoken, at level B1 (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages), or corresponding courses in Modern Greek and Byzantine Studies totaling at least 30 credits.

In the case of the Latinum and the Graecum, the required language skills are demonstrated by appropriate certificates from the Authority for Schools and Vocational Education and Training or the Faculty of Humanities, or by certificates recognized as equivalent by the Authority. Language skills acquired in a bachelor's program are generally verified by the transcript of records in the Diploma Supplement.

Recognition of certificates for degrees obtained abroad

For applicants who have obtained their first degree abroad, the recognition of a qualification obtained abroad will be carried out as part of the application process at the faculty.
