Physics

A prerequisite for studies in this Master's program is a grade of 2.7 or better in a Bachelor’s degree in the subject of Physics, in a related program covering basically the same material, or an equivalent degree. Furthermore, the applicant must also demonstrate successfully completed coursework in the following subjects in particular in his/her Bachelor’s studies:

• assessment in theoretical Physics (Quantum Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Statistical Physics, Classical Field Theory) and
• assessment in experimental Physics (Astronomy and Astrophysics, Nuclear and Particle Physics, Atomic and Molecular Physics, condensed matter, nanostructures) and
• experience in physical practical work.

or graduates with a four-year Bachelor's degree in physics (or a comparable qualification), the one-year Master's program consists of a project study for the Master's thesis (30 ECTS credits) and the Master's thesis (30 ECTS credits). Both are usually carried out in the supervisor's working group. At the beginning of the Master's program, an application for admission to the Master's examination must be submitted. A corresponding form is available from the Examination Office. The topic of the Master's thesis must be assigned within six weeks of admission to the Master's examination. The Master's examination must be completed within 12 months of the assignment of the topic of the Master's thesis. The prerequisite for beginning the project study is the assignment of the topic of the Master's thesis.

Graduates with a three-year Bachelor's degree in Physics (or equivalent) may also be admitted to the Master's program in Physics at the University of Tübingen. In this case, additional academic requirements are required for admission to the Master's examination. These include successful completion of so-called "bridging modules" totaling 60 credit points:

Modules of a specialization subject of the BSc Physics amounting to 21 credit points

additional modules from the BSc in Physics offering totaling 39 credit points. The selection of these modules should represent a meaningful addition to the bachelor's degree already completed and must be approved by the examination board. Upon request, modules from your bachelor's degree in physics (or equivalent qualification) that you have already completed in addition to the 180 ECTS points required in your bachelor's degree can be recognized.

The bridging modules are NOT a prerequisite for ADMISSION to the master's program. The bridging modules are taken as part of your master's degree in Tübingen from the range offered by the bachelor's degree in physics. After successfully completing these bridging modules, you can then register for the master's examination, i.e. begin the project study for the master's thesis and the subsequent master's thesis (see the corresponding information above for graduates with a four-year bachelor's degree in physics). The overall grade for the master's examination is determined by the grade for the master's thesis.
