What you need to apply for Modern Indian Studies at University of Gottingen
a) Cambridge English Scale, minimum of 180 points;
b) „International English Language Testing System” (IELTS Academic), minimum level Band 6.5 (as of the application round for the winter semester 2024/25 change to minimum level Band 7);
c) „Test of English as a Foreign Language, internet-based test” (TOEFL iBT), minimum of 110 points (as of the application round for the winter semester 2024/25 change to minimum 95 points);
d) Global Scale of English (Pearson Academic), minimum of 76 points;
e) UNIcert: level UNIcert III;
f) other certificate, minimum level C1 according to Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

The Master in Modern Indian Studies is a single major, four-semester programme. As this is an international study programme attracting students from around the world, all courses are conducted in English. Students may choose to complete either an M.A. in Modern Indian Studies or an M.A. in Modern Indian Studies with a study focus. To obtain a masters degree, students must complete 120 credits, including a masters thesis (30 credits).
What to prepare for your application to Modern Indian Studies
The following documents should be attached to the form for application of admission (§ 4, Admission Rules and Regulations (Ordnung über besondere Zugangsvoraussetzungen für den Promotionsstudiengang Sozialwissenschaften (PDF in German)):
Single-handedly signed application of approval (will be submitted via e-mail after successfull registration)
Final record / degree certificate (Bachelor) (if necessary in a certified German or English translation) if the preliminary studies are concluded and the document is already at hand. The final record / degree certificate (Bachelor) can be handed in later. The high school diploma does not have to be uploaded!
Overview of previous examination results (Transcript of record, FlexNow overview for students having previously studied at Georg-August-University Göttingen) including credits (at least 150 ECTS at time of application) and average grade (the summary of achievements is necessary to prove that the admission requirements are fulfilled)
CV/ personal data sheet with references to educational background, language skills, internships and research experience
A written motivation letter (up to two pages) from which the motivation for taking up the study is clearly recognizable
Proof of language competence for German (for those students having received their education in a country outside of Germany; not required for the MA degree programme Modern Indian Studies) for example in the form of the DSH-2, TestDaF (level 4), or telc – German C1 for university, the proof of language competence can be handed in, in case of admission, by the matriculation deadline at the latest (30th September in case of the winter semester, 31st March in case of the summer semester)
Only concerning MA degree program Modern Indian Studies:
Applicants whose mother tongue is not English, will have to proof a sufficient knowledge of English. More information on proof of language competency can be found here.

The applicants which fulfill the entrance requirements will be put into a rank order according to their (improved, where applicable) overall average grades. This ranking order will be continued to the doubled amount of available university places. If the number of applicants which fulfill the requirements exceeds the number of available university places, a selection interview will be held with the doubled number of applicants.
In case of additional available university places at the beginning of a new semester, you may apply for the so called "lottery procedure" (choice by lot). The above-named access authorization requirements count for the "lottery procedure", as well.
After receipt of your application, you will receive a confirmation of receipt by e-mail. The Graduate Committee of the Faculty of Social Sciences will decide whether you can be admitted (if necessary under conditions) promptly after the application deadline. A decision will be submitted by post.
