Questions about University of Gottingen

There is no single date. For Master's and PhD programmes, Göttingen asks you to check the entry for your programme in its study programmes A to Z list, for EU and non-EU applicants alike.

For the English-taught Master's in Modern Indian Studies, which starts only in the winter semester, the main window for non-EU applicants is in the previous year: 6 October to 15 November 2025 for winter 2026/27, and 6 October to 15 November 2026 for winter 2027/28. Here, non-EU means a non-EU/EEA nationality and a Bachelor's from a non-EU/EEA country. The page also describes a later lottery procedure for some applicants.

Applicants with a non-EU/EEA nationality and a Bachelor's from outside the EU/EEA apply from 1 October to 15 November of the previous calendar year for a winter semester start. Selection has two stages: first your written application, then a personal interview. These applicants hear by the end of February, or by mid-March if they also apply for an EPOS scholarship.

Yes, except for Modern Indian Studies. The faculty says its Master's courses are taught in German and German proficiency is required. You also need a subject-relevant Bachelor's of at least 180 ECTS by the start of the Master's, with at least 150 ECTS completed and recorded on the application date (15 May or 15 November).

For the winter semester 2026/27 the standard semester fee for enrolment and re-registration is 484.18 EUR, made up of the administrative fee, the student body contribution with the semester tickets, and the Studierendenwerk contribution. Some programmes and groups pay a different amount, for example 439.88 EUR for Sustainable International Agriculture and 409.18 EUR for exchange students.

The Studierendenwerk Göttingen lists the wait for each hall, and it is often between 6 and 24 months; for some flat types it is longer, up to 56 months. Rents are warm rents, including internet. You say in the online application which types of housing suit you.
